TAMAN NEGARA

History


Taman Negara was established at the Titiwangsa Mountains, Malaysia, in 1938/1939 as the King George V National Park. It was renamed to Taman Negara after independence, which literally means "national park" in Malay. Taman Negara has a total area of 4,343 km² and has a reputation as the world's oldest tropical rain-forest.

Taman Negara Pahang is the largest at 2,477 km², followed by Taman Negara Kelantan at 1,043 km² and Taman Negara Terengganu at 853 km².

The park has been developed into a famous Eco tourism destination in Malaysia. There are several geological and biological attractions in the park. Gunung Tahanis the highest point of the Malay Peninsula; climbers can use Kuala Tahan or Merapoh as their departure point. Taman Negara is the home of some rare mammals, such as the Malayan Tiger, Crab-eating macaque, Sumatran Rhinoceros, Great Argus, Red Jungle fowl, Malayan Gaur (seladang) and Asian elephant. Among the bird-life, the rare Malayan Peacock-Pheasant is still found here in some numbers. Tahan River has been preserved to protect the Malaysian mahseer (ikan kelah in Malay), a type of game fish.

Others attractions found near Kuala Tahan (Park headquarters for Pahang) include a canopy walkway, Gua Telinga (cave system), Lata Berkoh (rapid). Visitors can enjoy the tropical rain-forest  bird-watching or jungle trekking (e.g. Tenor Rentis) and the river views along the Tahan River.

All visitors to the park must get permits from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

Trekking Trail 



The network of the trekking trails are clearly marked, so it is easy and safe to trek in the jungle and surround yourself in the virgin jungle. Among the more popular trekking trails are , Canopy Walkway & Lubok Simpon - 4 hour, Kual Bukit Teresek a Tahan & Bumbun Kumbang (Hide) - 4 hour, Gua Telingga (Ear Cave Exploration) - 2.5 hour, Lubok Simpon - 25 minutes & Lata Berkoh Waterfall Cascade - 5 Hour

Other Trekking Trails are Bukit Indah, Warisan Hill, Abai Waterfall & Putri Waterfall

Overnight Trekking Trails are Tenor Rentis Trail (16Km), Kuala Keniam – Kuala Tahan Trail (28Km) & Gunung Tahan (55km)


Canopy Walkway


Let your spirit of adventure take you to new heights: THE CANOPY, which is the top layer of vegetation in the forest. Feast your eyes on the myriad of plants and animal species that make their home here. The 45 meters high and 510 meters long walkway is the longest canopy walk in the world. The forest canopy allows you to view the rich and diverse flora and fauna at the very summit of the forest. If you have not completed the canopy you have not completed Taman Negara.

Night Safari


The 4 wheel drive vehicle drives you into the oil palm plantation along the jungle border during the night for about 2 hours trying to locate the animals. There are chances of seeing the animals like Wild-boar, Deer, Jungle cats, Birds, Snakes and Insects.The strong powerful spot light is used to locate the animals. It helps to temporary blinded the animals during their night movement for food. There is a strong light reflection on the eye of animals which enable you to see and detect them during the night.





Night Jungle Walk 


Experience your walk in the jungle during the night and enjoy the special atmosphere  See the tropical forest nightlife. The numerous species of insect, flora and fauna. This walk takes 1,5 hours. 





Rapid Shooting towards Sungai Trenggan River Adventures


Further up the Tembeling river from the headquarters are seven sets of rapids, which provide an exciting ride when the river is in full flood, but you must be prepared to get wet or for a thorough soaking. Main activities are river rapid shooting and rafting. Get wet on the Seven Rapids & also the gateway to inner Taman Negara.




Observing Wildlife As Darkness Descends At The Jungle Hides


This is a nocturnal activity well worth the effort. There are six hides scattered around the park, some can be reached by walking, others by boat. Within the relatively safety of these hides, overlooking the salt licks and clearings, visitors get the chance to observe the often shy animals as they come to lick up the water and soil for essential mineral and salts for their body.



  • Kumbang Hide
To be done at night at a special location to observe wild life eat at a salt lake, 40 mins boat ride and an additional 45 mins walk to the hide.

  • Cegar Anjing Hide
A 20 mins walk from Kuala Tahan to reach hide.


  • Yong Hide
A 5 min boat ride and then 10 mins walk to reach hide.


  • Tahan Hide
This is the most popular hide – 5 minutes walk from the headquarters.

SIGHTSEEING TOURS IN PAHANG


KUANTAN AND CHERATING VILLAGE TOUR

Kuantan, the state capital, is situated on the banks of the Kuantan river mouth. Drive along the coastline which is dotted with Malay fishing villages and experience the life style of the people. Stop at Be serah fishing village to see villagers process their catch to salted fish, which is today a delicacy.Pass by the Royal Pahang Golf Club House. View some exclusive residence of the Royal family, the official residence of the Chief Minister and the State Guesthouse. Visit a colorful Hindu temple and photograph the new State Mosque en-route  Enjoy a stop at a cottage industry, and watch the intricate art of Batik making. At Cherating village, make a stop at at a Pandanus weaving where locals display and sell souvenir items too.

CHERATING VILLAGE TOUR


Situated 47 km from Kuantan is Cherating, with It's nique with its rustic atmosphere and warm hospitality of the village people. It is one of the most popular hangout place for beach-combers. There are many small private own chalet and a few major hotels. The first club in South East Asia of Club Med is located in Cherating at the South China Sea. And because it's the first, they got the best spot, although the whole region has fine sandy beach.

After Club Med came the other resorts. like: the Legend, the Impiana Hotel, Holiday Villa and the Residence Inn. All of them are beautiful hotels/resorts. It's a mixture between traditional and modern resorts. It has budget shacks by the sea, a handful of bars, some good restaurants and windsurfer breezes.

Along the beach of Cherating you can't miss the abundance of mini markets, evening food stalls and a few self-styled "art galleries" offering opportunity for tourists to learn about local handicrafts. Among the more popular handicrafts that are found in Cherating is the batik printing, and Pandanus leaves weaving just to name a few. A hands on experience is always welcome from the village folks that will be more than happy to impart their knowledge to you and also allow you to purchase your self-made product.
